Like most mechanical pieces they need periodic service. Clocks, both wall and mantles, which are mainspring driven, should be oiled every 5 years to keep them in good running condition. Weight driven clocks should be serviced every three years.
There isn't a specific age that clocks need this service. Depending on its maintenance record, most movements will get 25-30 years before a full overhaul is needed.
